STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Canada’s National Men’s Team has been eliminated at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, losing 3-2 to Sweden in a shootout in the quarter-finals. Sweden moves on to the semifinals to face Finland, which defeated Slovakia earlier in the day.

The other semifinal at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will have the United States facing Switzerland. Both semifinals will be May 18, with the medal games played May 19.

In Thursday’s quarter-final, Steven Stamkos (Unionville, Ont./Tampa Bay, NHL) and Claude Giroux (Hearst, Ont./Philadelphia, NHL) scored for Canada in regulation, Giroux’s goal tying the game and forcing overtime at 10:50 of the third period. Sweden scored twice in the four-round shootout, while Canada could only manage a goal by Jordan Eberle (Regina, Sask./Edmonton, NHL).
