From Sun., June 2 through Sat., June 8 in Dresden, Germany, sixteen teams are competing at the 2013 IIHF InLine Hockey World Championship.

Hockey Canada president and CEO Bob Nicholson, also vice-president of the IIHF and in charge of inline hockey, has headed over to Germany to spend some time with teams, referees and the entire inline family during their annual world championship.

Here’s what he had to say about his inline worlds experience:

How do you like the world championship here in Germany?

“This is a great tournament with competitive games and teams playing and loving our sport. Unfortunately, the current flood situation takes attention away from this amazing event to more important and tragic issues. However, we can see the inline hockey growing, and driving this tournament on a very professional level (are) very engaged organizers.”

Do you like the idea of having two tournaments at the same time, in the same place?

“In my understanding, the inline hockey family likes the current model. Although there are quite a few logistic challenges to organizers regarding courts, hotels (and) transportation due to the number of teams, everybody I spoke to prefer the community feeling in these tournaments. For that reason, we’ll keep the format as it is, but we are always flexible enough to make adjustments if needed.”

What do you think about the current situation in German hockey?

First of all, it is strange and hard to understand for me that there are clubs or organizations in Germany that don’t want to co-operate with the DEB. I have known the DEB and its leaders for many, many years as very professional hockey experts, great organizers, and very good friends with passion and love for our great sport.

Hockey Canada will continue to grow the sport of hockey with the IIHF and its member federations. I am confident that … Germany will continue to work together for betterment of hockey.”
