TOP REGULAR SEASON TEAM – BATTLEFORDS NORTH STARS
The Battlefords North Stars celebrated the 10th anniversary of winning their last SJHL regular-season championship by … winning the SJHL regular-season championship for the first time in 10 years. The North Stars lapped the field in the Finning Division, going a combined 20-0-1 against Humboldt, Kindersley and Notre Dame to finish with a 37-point lead, and it had a seven-point advantage over the defending SJHL champions from Melfort in the overall standings. Battlefords was among the best at both ends of the ice – its 239 goals topped the league, while it was No. 2 with 146 goals against. The North Stars also had the league’s second-best power play, finishing just 0.2 percent behind Yorkton (with 117 more opportunities). Igor Leonenko paced the offence, finishing second in SJHL scoring with 88 points, while Layne Young and Coby Downs also broke the 70-point barrier to put themselves in the top 10. In goal, Tyler Fuhr had seven wins and an overtime loss in nine appearances after joining the North Stars from Estevan at the trade deadline, while Taryn Kotchorek finished with the league’s second-best goals-against average (2.02) and fourth-best save percentage (.920), although he played in just four games after the addition of Fuhr.
