SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – The Calgary Northstars were crowned 2003 Air Canada Cup champions on Sunday afternoon at the Sault Ste. Marie Memorial Gardens, with an exciting 5-1 win over the Collège Antoine-Girouard Gaulois.

The final proved to be a far different story then when the two same times faced off in the first game of the round robin portion of the 2003 Air Canada Cup. At that time, Collège Antoine-Girouard easily handled Calgary with the final scoring reading 7-0.

An early goal in the third by Matt Robinson gave Calgary the momentum in the third as Calgary captured Alberta’s third gold medal all-time at the Air Canada Cup, having also won in 1989 and in 1990 (as the host team). For Quebec, it marked a fourth silver medal all-time to go with nine gold medals at the Air Canada Cup.

In earlier action on Sunday, Brad Smith scored at 9:10 of the first overtime period as the St. John’s Maple Leafs edged the Yorkton Harvest 5-4 to capture the bronze medal.
