42 Players Invited to 1999 National Women's Evaluation Camp at Montreal's Maurice Richard Arena From October 5-12
CALGARY, AB -- Forty-two players have been invited to the Fall Evaluation Camp for the National Women's Hockey Team that will compete for Canada at the 1999 Women's World Hockey Championship in Espoo, Finland, the Canadian Hockey Association announced Friday.
The invitees include 19 of the 20 women who won silver medals at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan and 11 players who attended the National Women's Under-22 Team camp in Calgary in August. Laura Schuler, the other Olympic silver medalist, is recovering from knee surgery and will be unable to attend the camp.
Canada will be gunning for a fifth straight Women's World Hockey Championship title in Finland from March 8-14 and the Fall camp is the first step towards retaining the World Championship title. Head coach Danièle Sauvageau will oversee the camp, working with assistants Ken Dufton, who is the head coach of the Beatrice Aeros of North York, ON, and Karen Hughes, head coach of the University of Toronto Varsity women's team.
The players will go through six days of workouts, including four intra-squad games, during the seven-day camp. Friday, Oct. 9 will be an off-day from on-ice work, but the team will do some team-building activities that day.
"The list of invited players, with 11 Under-22 athletes, as well as 19 Olympic medalists and 17 who have
won at least one World Championship Gold medal, reflects a healthy blend of youth and experience among the
hopefuls for the 1999 National Women's Team," said Sauvageau, who was an assistant coach at Nagano and on the
National Women's Team when it won a gold medal at the 1997 Women's World Championship in Kitchener, ON.
"This will be an excellent opportunity for our coaching staff to see how some of the up and coming players
measure up against our veterans. I'm very much looking forward to the camp."
The CHA held the first-ever NIKE Elite Development Camp for the National Under-22 Women's Team at Calgary's Father David Bauer Arena in August.
About 30 players from the Fall selection camp will be invited to compete for Canada at tri-nation competitions involving Finland and the United States in December in Finland and/or January in Canada . Following those competitions, the coaching staff will select the 20 players who will compete at the 1999 World Championship, Sauvageau said.
Canada, seeded second in that tournament, and grouped with Finland, Germany and Switzerland in Group A of the eight-team competition, opens play against Switzerland on Monday, March 8. Canada will play host to the Women's World Hockey Championship in the year 2000.
