Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team set for 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women's World Championship

Micah Hart named captain, Jaycee Gebhard, Sarah Potomak and Josiane Pozzebon to serve as alternates

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The puck is set to drop on the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship, with Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team playing its opening game against the United States on Monday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.

In preliminary round action, Canada also plays Russia on Tuesday, Jan. 6 and the Czech Republic on Thursday, Jan. 8. Quarter-finals are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 9, and semifinals are set for Sunday, Jan. 11.

The tournament culminates with the gold medal game Monday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. All 22 games at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship will be played at HarborCenter in Buffalo.

Head coach Cassandra Turner announced Saturday that Micah Hart (Saanichton, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, JWHL) will captain Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team at the world championship, while Jaycee Gebhard (Plenty, Sask./Notre Dame, JWHL), Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, Midget AAA) and Josiane Pozzebon (Bourget, Ont./Nepean, PWHL) will serve as alternate captains.

Canada played a pair of pre-tournament games at Thompson Arena in London, Ont., ahead of the world championship, both against Carleton University. The Canadians scored a 4-0 win over their Canadian Interuniversity Sport opposition on Jan. 1, and swept the exhibition series with a 5-1 victory on Jan. 2.

Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team features 23 players, including three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards. It was chosen by Melody Davidson, Hockey Canada’s general manager of national women’s team programs, and Hockey Canada’s team of regional scouts, along with Turner, assistant coaches Delaney Collins, Jackie Friesen and Noémie Marin, and goaltending consultant Amanda Mazzotta.

Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team roster also includes:

  • 19 players who competed for Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team in a three-game series against the United States in August in Calgary, Alta. (Agnew, Boissonnault, Cogan, Coutu-Godbout, Eastwood, Gebhard, Hart, Higham, Houston, Hunt, Jackson, Labbe, McGill, O’Neill, Potomak, Pozzebon, Quaranta, Sucharda, Tse);
  • four players who attended Canada’s National Women’s Team Fall Festival in Calgary in September (Agnew, Hart, Cogan, Potomak);
  • four players who participated in the 2014 IIHF Women’s High Performance Camp in Vierumäki, Finland in July (Campbell, Gebhard, Houston, Hunt);
  • three players who won a gold medal with Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship in Budapest, Hungary (Cogan, Hart, Potomak).

Canada has won four gold medals at the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014), and will look to capture its fourth consecutive world title in Buffalo.
