More than 1,000 players have competed for their provinces since the first National Women’s Under-18 Championship in 2001. On the eve of the 10th edition of the event, 10 players reflect on their outstanding performances.

#4 – Halli Krzyzaniak (Manitoba, 2012)

Her numbers: 1G 1A 2P

Her hardware: Silver medal (2012), bronze medal (2011)

Her story: The only player to be named Top Defenceman and Most Valuable Player at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship, Krzyzaniak captained Manitoba to its best-ever finish in 2012. In the semifinals against British Columbia, her power play marker in the first period proved to be the game-winner that sent her province to its first gold medal game. One year earlier, the blue-liner, now with Canada’s National Women’s Team, wore an ‘A’ while winning bronze.

In her own words: “Making it to the finals was a big feat for Manitoba. It was really special to me that I was able to be a part of that and help my province achieve something that we’d been working toward for so long.”

“I’ve been fortunate to wear a letter on a bunch of different teams, but to wear it for your home province when you’re representing the province as a whole is really something special.”

“I actually didn’t know I was the only defenceman to win [MVP] so that’s pretty cool. I was honestly just happy to contribute to such a successful run for Manitoba, and to be recognized as the MVP there wasn’t something I was working toward at all. It’s not really even in the back of your mind because your whole focus is team success. But to have that award given out after is a pretty cool thing.”

“Getting to play higher calibre girls and against better competition overall really helps you elevate your game. The fact that it’s such a short competition really prepares you for what it’s like when you go to a world championship. You know you may be with the team only a couple of times throughout the year but somehow you find a way to build team chemistry and perform your best in such a short time span. That was a pretty valuable experience that I learned.”
