More than 1,000 players have competed for their provinces since the first National Women’s Under-18 Championship in 2001. On the eve of the 10th edition of the event, 10 players reflect on their outstanding performances.

#5 – Brianne Jenner (Ontario Red, 2008)

Her numbers: 3G 3A 6P

Her hardware: Two gold medals (2007, 2008)

Her story: Before starting the comeback at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and before scoring the shootout winner at the 2014 4 Nations Cup, Jenner provided big-game heroics in Napanee, Ont. The captain of Ontario Red scored three goals in 2008, all game-winners: an overtime tally against Ontario Blue in the opener; the decisive marker in the semifinals versus Manitoba; and, in double overtime, the gold medal winner to beat Quebec. After being the youngest player at the November 2005 event as a member of Ontario Blue, she finished with 11 points in her three appearances at the U18 nationals.

In her own words: “It was really cool to have the tournament in my home province. It was a small arena but it was just filled to the brim each game. It was a great atmosphere. I think it was my favourite tournament I played in.”

“There’s always a lot of pressure on Team Red and that’s kind of one of the challenges but also one of the exciting things. I remember [the gold medal game] was a really tight game. I can remember the goal. We had a turnover in the neutral zone and I think it was Ally Tarr who sent me on a breakaway so I was in alone with the goalie and was lucky enough to put it past her. It was a pretty exciting moment for such a great game to end the way it did. In big games like that there are always nerves, but it’s something you look forward to as an elite player. You’re excited for that pressure. If you didn’t want it, you wouldn’t be there.”

“It’s always a super-tight game against Ontario Blue. People think that Red is the A team and has the advantage, but I’ve played on Ontario Blue as well and when you’re on that team you kind of want to show your stuff. When we were knocked out [in November 2005], of course we’re cheering for Ontario Red in the final, but when you’re matched up against them it’s extremely competitive. They played really well and pushed us to overtime. I think it was just a play out of the corner and I just drove the goal line and put it over the goalie’s shoulder.”
