Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team to play for gold medal at 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team will play for its fourth consecutive gold medal at the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship after a 3-1 semifinal victory over Russia on Sunday.

Canada will face the United States in Monday’s gold medal game at HarborCenter, beginning at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. The U.S. beat the Czech Republic 5-0 in its semifinal on Sunday night.

Canada and the United States have met in all seven previous gold medal games at the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship. The Canadians won their third straight world championship last year, beating the Americans 5-1 in Budapest, Hungary.

Overall, Canada has won four gold medals at the world championship (2010, 2012, 2013, 2014).

On Sunday, Shae Labbe (Calgary, Alta./Warner School, JWHL) and Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, Midget AAA) had a goal and an assist each, and Jaycee Gebhard (Plenty, Sask./Notre Dame, PWHL) also scored to help Canada beat Russia in the semifinals for the second year in a row. Marlène Boissonnault (Dundee, N.B./Rothesay Netherwood School, CAHS) stopped 17 of 18 shots to earn the win in the Canadian goal.

Canada finished the preliminary round with a record of two wins and an overtime loss. It opened with a 2-1 shootout loss to the United States before earning victories over Russia (3-2) and the Czech Republic (7-1).

The United States finished first in Group A, Canada was second, Russia took third and Czech Republic came in fourth place. Sweden finished atop Group B, followed by Finland, Switzerland and Japan.

Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team roster includes:

  • 19 players who competed for Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team in a three-game series against the United States in August in Calgary, Alta. (Agnew, Boissonnault, Cogan, Coutu-Godbout, Eastwood, Gebhard, Hart, Higham, Houston, Hunt, Jackson, Labbe, McGill, O’Neill, Potomak, Pozzebon, Quaranta, Sucharda, Tse);
  • four players who attended Canada’s National Women’s Team Fall Festival in Calgary in September (Agnew, Hart, Cogan, Potomak);
  • four players who participated in the 2014 IIHF Women’s High Performance Camp in Vierumäki, Finland in July (Campbell, Gebhard, Houston, Hunt);
  • three players who won a gold medal with Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship in Budapest, Hungary (Cogan, Hart, Potomak).
