Hockey Canada's 93Rd Annual General Meeting Begins Thursday in Halifax

HALIFAX, N.S. – Several initiatives related to the growth and development of hockey across the country will be discussed during Hockey Canada’s 93rd annual general meeting (AGM), which runs from Thursday, May 24 through Sunday, May 27 at the Westin Nova Scotian.

More than 250 representatives from regional and provincial hockey associations are gathering in Halifax for Hockey Canada’s AGM, with the governing body’s board of directors to be joined by life members and partner organizations, as well as councils that oversee female hockey, junior hockey, minor hockey, senior hockey and hockey development.

These representatives come together annually to set Hockey Canada’s direction to help the growth of hockey.

Hockey Canada’s annual general meeting in Halifax will address topics that include:

  • respect in the game, highlighted by a Friday morning session with former NHLer Sheldon Kennedy and former NHL official Don Koharski;
  • updates on Hockey Canada’s three initiatives:
    • player recruitment and retention
    • technology
    • e-learning
  • player safety, including concussion education and prevention, return to play protocol and an update on the Junior A pilot study;
  • governance;
  • updates and discussion on the board’s six priorities of focus;
  • national championship site selection for the 2014 RBC Cup, 2014 Esso Cup, 2014 TELUS Cup, 2013 National Women’s Under-18 Championship and 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge;
  • membership programs, including a membership card for the 2012-13 season;
  • final player registration figures for 2011-12;
  • recognition of national champions for 2011-12;
  • reports from councils (female hockey, junior hockey, minor hockey, senior hockey and hockey development).

Hockey Canada’s 2012 awards banquet is set for the evening of Friday, May 25, where 10 deserving recipients will be honoured in different categories for their contributions and commitment to hockey in Canada.
