The Centre of the Hockey Universe will welcome one of the biggest events on the Hockey Canada calendar this summer when the ninth annual Hockey Canada Foundation Celebrity Classic comes to Toronto.

The Air Canada Centre will play host to the gala, where Canada’s world championship-winning teams will receive their gold medal rings, on June 25 before the event moves to The Club at Bond Head for the golf tournament the following day.

The 2012 HCF Celebrity Classic, the largest fundraiser for the Hockey Canada Foundation, is being hosted in partnership with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and MLSE’s Team Up Foundation.

“We are proud and excited to partner with MLSE and the Team Up Foundation for this year’s gala and golf tournament,” said Chris Bright, executive director of the Hockey Canada Foundation. “We have a common goal of putting more children on the ice and getting them involved in the game, and we look forward to combining our efforts to make it a reality.”

Proceeds from the 2012 HCF Celebrity Classic will go towards the support of a community rink initiative in Toronto, as well as future Hockey Canada Foundation programming.

Similar arena initiatives were part of the HCF Celebrity Classic in each of the last three years, with outdoor rinks up and running in Montreal and Ottawa, and funds earmarked for development in Edmonton.

The Hockey Canada Foundation works closely with Hockey Canada to raise money to support minor hockey programs. The foundation focuses on five areas of funding: skill development and qualified coaching; accessibility and diversity; health and wellness; athlete and alumni support; and next-generation programming.

The gala and golf tournament will be held for the fourth time in Toronto, which previously hosted in 2004, 20. Calgary (2007, 2008), Montreal (2009), Edmonton (2010) and Ottawa (2011) have also played host to the Celebrity Classic, which has raised more than $3.5 million in its first eight years.

“Hockey Canada is very excited about coming back to Toronto for our foundation’s gala and golf tournament in June 2011,” said Bob Nicholson, president and CEO of Hockey Canada. “I’d also like to thank MLSE executive vice-president and COO Tom Anselmi for his commitment; we wouldn’t be able to host events like this without the support of partners like Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.”
