The first step towards the 2011 World Junior A Challenge in Langley, B.C., will come in mid-September when more than 100 of Canada’s top Junior A players will gather for Canada East and Canada West evaluation camps, the first opportunity players will have to impress the teams’ coaching staffs, which were announced Wednesday.

Kanata, Ont., will host the Canada East evaluation camp September 18-22, as up to 60 of the top players from the Ontario Junior Hockey League, Northern Ontario Hockey League, Central Canada Hockey League, Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Québec and Maritime Hockey League will take to the ice at the Bell Sensplex.

“As a league we have been strong advocates for the World Junior A Challenge since its inception in 2006,” said Kevin Abrams, commissioner of the Central Canada Hockey League. “Our players and coaches have been proud contributors to Canada East every year and to be selected to host the selection camp is a great honour for the CCHL. This is a tremendous opportunity for hockey fans in the Ottawa area to see 60 of Eastern Canada's best Junior A players, and it yet another of several partnerships between Capital Sports Management and the Central Canada Hockey League.”

Canada West hopefuls will be on the ice at the Canmore Recreation Centre in Canmore, Alta., September 11-15, with as many as 60 players from the British Columbia Hockey League, Alberta Junior Hockey League, Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Manitoba Junior Hockey League and Superior International Junior Hockey League taking part.

“The Canmore Eagles organization is thrilled that the Town of Canmore has been selected as a site for a World Junior A Challenge evaluation camp,” said John Ross, director of sales and marketing for the Eagles. “This event is a win-win for the community. Being involved with the World Junior A Challenge will provide the Town of Canmore with tremendous national exposure, and will also provide a significant economic benefit to our local business community. It will also be a big boost for the promotion of junior hockey in the Bow Valley. It is a huge privilege to be a part of this successful event, and we are very excited and honoured to be included.”

Following the evaluation camps, Canada East and Canada West coaching staffs will continue to monitor players with their club teams during the early weeks of the 2011-12 season. Both teams will hold selection camps the week prior to the 2011 World Junior A Challenge to get down to their final 22-player roster.

More information on the Canada East and Canada West selection camps, including dates, locations, rosters and schedules, will be announced in early October.

“We’re very excited to have both Kanata and Canmore as stops on the road to the 2011 World Junior A Challenge,” said Kirk Lamb, chairman of the Canadian Junior Hockey League. “Both of these cities have successful Junior A programs, and we’re pleased to be able to bring Canada’s top Junior A players to their fans.”
