Before the Camrose Kodiaks and Vernon Vipers hit the ice at the 2011 RBC Cup on Saturday night to open the 41st National Junior A Championship, there already a winner – a $10,000 RBC Play Hockey grant was awarded to the Camrose Minor Hockey Association.

"We know that without skates to tie, volunteers to teach and coaches to inspire the game of hockey simply could not happen," said Dwain Krissa, RBC regional vice-president for Alberta North. "Having the RBC Cup in Camrose has shown us how important hockey is to this community and we want to help them get better and go further in this great game."

Carla MacLeod, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, helped to celebrate the announcement by challenging players from the Camrose Minor Hockey Association to a shoot-out challenge at the RBC Play Hockey Experience, located in front of the Edgeworth Centre, site of the 2011 RBC Cup.

The Camrose Minor Hockey Association will use the donation to create a coaches kit, purchase equipment and host skill development camps for both players and coaches.

"This grant will help us to provide our players and future players with the best minor hockey experience, whether that is helping them build skills or providing materials they couldn’t otherwise have afforded," said Brent Gotaas, who applied for the grant on behalf of the Camrose Minor Hockey Association.

RBC has been involved in hockey at both the community and national level for decades.  Through RBC Play Hockey, it has the opportunity to strengthen and energize the game at the grassroots level and deliver a hockey program that gives everyone the chance to play.

Over the next year, $1 million in grants will be awarded to help shine the spotlight on the people and programs associated with hockey in communities across North America. RBC Play Hockey grants will be given to existing or future projects dedicated to helping people play all forms and all levels of hockey. Applications are reviewed by a panel of hockey experts. RBC Play Hockey grant applications will be accepted until .
