Harley Hotchkiss Passed Away Peacefully This Morning at His Home in Calgary.

Harley Norman Hotchkiss was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario. He was a Canadian business and community leader who has made great contributions to health and sports development in Canada.

He was a part owner of the Calgary Flames, having been one of the original group of six Calgary businessmen who bought and moved the NHL’s Atlanta Flames hockey team to Calgary in 1980. Under the ownership group, the Flames have twice been recipients of the Campbell Bowl as Western Division champions, and captured the Stanley Cup in 1989. Hotchkiss also contributed significantly to the creation of the International Hockey Centre of Excellence for Hockey Canada.

From 1994-97, he co-chaired the Partners in Health Campaign, a $50-million fundraising project to support health-related initiatives in the Calgary area. 

In 1997, Harley Hotchkiss was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 1998, he was awarded the Alberta Order of Excellence.

He was chairman of the National Hockey League board of governors from 19.
