CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada, in partnership with Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of
Newfoundland and Labrador, announced Monday several development activities for minor hockey players that will
take place in conjunction with the 2010 4 Nations Cup, coming to St. John’s and Clarenville, N.L. from
November 9-13.
The development activities include an Esso Fun Day, designed for girls who want to give hockey a try in a
positive environment, to be held at the Mile One Centre in St. John’s on Thursday, November 11. The day
includes both on- and off-ice activities which allow first-time female hockey participants to learn the basic
skills and rules of the game, while also making new friends and having fun. This Esso Fun Day is being
offered free of charge.
Hockey Canada and Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador are also hosting an Atlantic Bantam Female Skills
Challenge at both the Mile One Centre and Twin Rinks in St. John’s on Thursday, November 11 and Friday,
November 12. This event will feature seven of the top female Bantam-level players from each of the Atlantic
Canadian branches, along with one coach from each of the four Atlantic provinces.
The 28 players and four coaches from New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince
Edward Island were selected based upon their performances at the 2010 Atlantic Challenge Cup, held October
8-11 in Moncton, N.B. They will participate in on- and off-ice skills testing, and a series of three-on-three
games, during the two-day challenge. The event will also include team-building sessions and special
presentations that will give participants new tools to take back to their local minor hockey
associations.
“These development activities are sure to inspire young girls to dream big,” said Kalli Quinn, director of
female national teams for Hockey Canada. “Whether they aspire to one day put on a Team Canada jersey, or have
goals outside of hockey, these programs will instil in their young participants self-esteem and life skills
that will help them succeed in whatever they may choose.”
Several young female hockey players will also have the chance to take part in unique opportunities before
and during 2010 4 Nations Cup games. The McDonald’s In The Line Up program, for instance, allows a minor
hockey player to skate onto the ice with their hockey idols during a pre-game warm-up, while mini-games
during intermissions give young female participants the chance to experience playing in front of large and
supportive crowds under the bright lights of a major arena. In total, 16 female minor hockey players will
participate in McDonald’s In The Line Up and up to 120 girls will get the chance to play in an intermission
mini-game during this year’s 4 Nations Cup.
Additionally, Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador is hosting a female jamboree for players under age nine and
a female tournament for under-15 teams in partnership with the St. John’s Minor Hockey Association, a female
tournament for under-12 teams in partnership with the Mount Pearl Minor Hockey Association and a female
under-20 tournament in partnership with the Southern Shore Minor Hockey Association, all taking place from
Thursday, November 11 to Sunday, November 14.
“Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador is ecstatic that the 4 Nations Cup is being held in St. John’s and
Clarenville,” said Bonnie Evans, female chair of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador. “We look forward to seeing
female hockey at the forefront of our branch like it has never been before.”
The 2010 4 Nations Cup is being held in St. John’s and Clarenville to help Hockey Newfoundland and
Labrador celebrate its 75th anniversary. The event will bring together the top four women’s hockey nations in
the world – Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States – for the first time since the 2010 Olympic Winter
Games in Vancouver, B.C. The four countries competing at the 2010 4 Nations Cup finished as the top four in
Vancouver, led by the gold medal-winning Canadian team.
