Canada Loses to Russia in Quarterfinals at 2010 IIHF World Championship

COLOGNE, Germany – Canada was defeated 5-2 by Russia in quarterfinal play on Thursday in Cologne, Germany, at the 2010 IIHF World Championship. This marks the first time since 2002 that Canada has not advanced to the semifinals.

Maxim Afinogenov scored for Russia in the first period and Pavel Datsyuk and Evgeni Malkin added power-play goals in the second. Sergei Federov’s goal in the third period made it 4-0. John Tavares (Oakville, Ont./New York Islanders, NHL) and Matt Duchene (Haliburton, Ont./Colorado, NHL) scored Canada’s goals in the final frame. Malkin scored his second goal into an empty net.

Russia will face Germany and the Czech Republic will take on Sweden in the semi-finals on May 22. Both medal games will take place on May 24. Details at www.hockeycanada.ca.  

Canada’s players and staff will be returning home over the coming days. Flight arrival information is not available, as flights will only be confirmed over the coming 24-48 hours. Please make note that some players and staff members will not be immediately returning to North America.

Canada’s management at the 2010 IIHF World Championship was comprised of general manager Mark Messier, Hockey Canada director of men’s national teams Scott Salmond, Doug Risebrough, Michel Goulet and Doug Messier.

Canada’s coaching staff was made up of head coach Craig MacTavish (London, Ont.), associate coach Peter DeBoer (Dunnville, Ont./Florida Panthers, NHL) and assistant coach Billy Moores (Edmonton, Alta./Edmonton Oilers, NHL)

TSN/RDS will be broadcasting both semifinals on May 22 and both medal games and May 24. Check local listings for times in your area.
