The 2009 TELUS Cup host committee today announced an official call for volunteers for the National Midget Championship, slated for the Selkirk Recreation Complex from April 20-26.

To date more than 100 people have registered to volunteer for the prestigious tournament, about half of what will be required to successfully operate the six-team event. And with just under three months remaining until the first game, the committee wants to invite those interested in volunteering to apply.

“If someone hasn’t had a volunteer experience before, it will be a very fun week,” said 2009 TELUS Cup volunteer chair Gord Henrikson. “Not only are additional volunteers needed to service our operation of the tournament, but they’ll also be able to watch some great hockey action during the week.”

Volunteers are required in the areas of Game Operations, Team Services and Facility Operations, including security. Those volunteering for the seven-day tournament will be required to work a minimum of five-hour shifts with a total commitment of no less than 25 hours dedicated to the event overall.

Winnipeg and Selkirk have a deep and rich history when it comes to volunteering at shared hockey events, including the extremely successful 1999 IIHF World Junior Championships and the 2007 IIHF World Women’s Championship. This volunteer loyalty has further served Selkirk well in hosting the 2001 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and other major events such as provincial curling championships and the Western Canada Summer Games.

Those volunteering will be outfitted with TELUS Cup apparel and all volunteers will be required to pass a criminal record and child abuse registry check. Applications to be a 2009 TELUS Cup volunteer can be picked up in person at the Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association, Hockey Manitoba, the City of Selkirk (Community Services Office) and Keystone Sports (Selkirk), or at Telus Cup.

Ticket packages for the entire tournament can be purchased for just $79 (plus convenience fee) and are obtainable through the aforementioned locations or via Ticketmaster at 780-3333.

The 2009 TELUS Cup will feature the best Midget teams from five regions across Canada (Pacific, West, Central, Quebec and Atlantic) along with the host Winnipeg Thrashers, who were silver medal winners at last year’s national championship in Arnprior, Ontario.
