SELKIRK, Man. – After two exciting semifinals on Saturday, the gold medal game is set at the 2009 TELUS Cup.

The Notre Dame Hounds (West) and Calgary Buffaloes (Pacific) will meet for Canada’s 31st National Midget Championship on Sunday night at the Selkirk Recreation Centre after positing victories in their respective semifinals. The Hounds used a late third period comeback to top the Rousseau Sports de Laval-Bourassa (Quebec) 6-4 in Saturday’s early game, while the Buffaloes routed the Winnipeg Thrashers (Host) 7-0.

The gold medal game will be broadcast live on TSN2 at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT. It will be shown on tape delay on the main TSN network at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT. Check your local listings for the broadcast time in your area.

The Hounds, making their record-tying ninth appearance at the National Midget Championship, will play for gold for the first time since 1987, when they lost 6-2 to the Riverains du Richelieu in Gloucester, Ont. Notre Dame has not won gold since 1986, when it defeated the Toronto Red Wings 8-5 in Moncton, N.B. A win on Sunday would be the third for the Hounds, tying them for second all-time, trailing only the Regina Pat Canadians.

Calgary will make its third appearance in the gold medal game, looking for a second gold medal to join the one it won in 1989, defeating the Regina Pat Canadians 4-3 in St. John’s, N.L. The last time the Buffaloes played for the national championship was 2006, when it took part in the longest game in National Midget Championship, losing 5-4 in triple overtime to the Prince Albert Mintos.

In their semifinal, the Hounds got goals from Jesse Pauls and Lucas Froese 1:24 apart late in the third period to erase a 4-3 deficit and advance to the gold medal game. Bryce Milson scored twice for Notre Dame, while Pat McGillis and Zach Hodder added singles. The Hounds are the only undefeated team at the 2009 TELUS Cup, with a 5-0-1 record.

The line of Joel Lowry, Dylan Nowakowski and Brett Pinder combined for eight points as the Buffaloes prevented the Thrashers from making their second appearance in the gold medal game in as many years. Nowakowski led the way with two goals and an assist, while Lowry pitched in with a goal and two helpers. Drydn Dow and Greg Lamoureux also scored for Calgary, while Sam Brittain made 38 saves for the shutout.

The Hounds and Buffaloes met on Monday in the second game of the tournament, and it took an Alexandre Roy power play goal with 2:30 to go to earn Notre Dame a 4-4 tie, the only blemish on the record of the West Region champions. Calgary led that game 3-2 and 4-3, twice allowing the Hounds to tie the game.

The Rousseau Sports and Thrashers will meet for the bronze medal on Sunday morning (11 a.m. CT).
