Canada's National Women's Team Moves On To Playoff Round At 2009 IIHF World Women's Championship

HÄMEENLINNA, Finland – Canada’s National Women’s Team has advanced to the playoff round at the 2009 IIHF World Women’s Championship.

Canada defeated Sweden 7-0 on Monday in Finland to move to 2-0 in Pool B. That gives Canada the top ranking in Pool B and one of three spots in the top pool in the playoff round. The United States, which won Pool A with a 2-0 record, and Finland, which went 2-0 to take Pool C, will be Canada’s competition in the next round.

On Monday, Carla MacLeod (Calgary, Alta./Calgary, WWHL) scored a goal and added four assists to lead Canada to the win over Sweden. Colleen Sostorics (Kennedy, Sask./Calgary, WWHL), Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, Que./Montreal, CWHL), Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, Man./Mississauga, CWHL), Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, Sask./Ekilstuna, SWE), Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que./Dawson College, CEGEP) and Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) also scored for Canada.

Canada will face Finland on Wednesday, April 8, a game that can be seen live on TSN and RDS, Hockey Canada’s official broadcasters (12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT). Canada’s second game in the playoff pool will be against the United States on Friday, April 10. TSN/RDS will also carry that game live at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT.

The two teams with the best records in the playoff round will meet for the gold medal on Sunday, April 12 at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT, a game that can be seen live on TSN/RDS.
