'Game Plan' Announced for 2009 World Under-17 Challenge

The 2009 World Under-17 Challenge host committee put forward its game plan today at the monthly Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce networking luncheon and made a number of key announcements.

Host committee co-chair Tom McEvay highlighted the game schedule and confirmed that the Alberni Valley Multiplex will host a total of 16 games. Teams will be added to the schedule once the draw is approved by IIHF governing bodies in participating countries.

Schedule

Pre-tournament games will be played on December 28th in all communities

Partner communities host two games each on the following days:

Nanaimo December 29th and January 3rd

Campbell River December 30th

Cowichan Valley December 31st

Courtenay/Comox January 1st

Oceanside January 2nd

The Alberni Valley Multiplex will host two games daily from December 29th to January 2nd, playoff games on January 3rd and the bronze medal and gold medal games on January 4th. Games are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. daily.

Tickets

Tickets will be released for sale March 15th in Port Alberni with partner communities expected to have tickets available in early April. Tickets in Port Alberni will be available online and by phone via www.tickets.com. Eight-hundred ticket packages will be available on the initial offering with full-event packages costing $256 (including all taxes and service fees). Event packages include all games played at the Multiplex: one pre-tournament game, 11 round-robin games, two semi-finals, bronze medal game and gold medal game.

Sponsorship

Dave McCormick, director of marketing and sales, released an outline of sponsorship opportunities and confirmed several commitments that are already in place.

The Best Western Barclay Hotel will be providing the event with a number of components as the official accommodations & family banquet headquarters and Chances Rimrock Gaming Center & the Coulson Group have come to the table as official entertainment and operations headquarters. Both organizations have made a commitment to the event in excess of $15,000.

The Community Tourism Fund was also confirmed, which allows for a City of Port Alberni partnership with the Province of British Columbia and Union of B.C. Municipalities to assist with the provision of facilities and services. This program will cover the majority of anticipated facility costs without local tax dollars being accessed.
