LONDON, ONTARIO – Team Ontario defeated Team USA 3-0 to win the 2008 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge on Friday night before 8,889 fans at the John Labatt Centre.

Bryce O’Hagen (Burlington, ON/Sault Ste. Marie, OHL) stopped 28 shots for the shutout in what was his first game of the 2008 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Team Ontario opened the scoring in the gold medal game when Taylor Hall (Kingston, ON/Windsor, OHL) fired a hard wrist shot that beat USA goaltender Brandon Maxwell at 12:56 of the first period. Ontario struck for two goals in the second period, as Peter Holland (Caledon, ON/Guelph, OHL) and Matthew Duchene (Haliburton, ON/Brampton, OHL) both scored.

Ontario (6-0) became the first team to win all of its games at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge since 2001, when Team USA went 6-0 en route to the title in New Glasgow and Truro, NS. This was Ontario’s sixth WU17 title all-time, a record that includes winning the split championship in 1998.

Friday night’s gold medal final set a new record for attendance at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. The old record of 6,247 was set in 2004 in St. John’s, NL.

Earlier on Friday, Team West won the bronze medal with a 9-6 victory over Team Pacific. Jimmy Bubnick (Saskatoon, SK/Kamloops, WHL) and Jason Gardiner (Winnipeg, MB/Tri-City, WHL) each scored two goals to lead West and singles were added by Brandon Herrod (Meadow Lake, SK/Prince Albert, WHL), James Henry (Winnipeg, MB/Vancouver, WHL), Brayden Schenn (Saskatoon, SK/Brandon, WHL), Garrett Mitchell (Regina, SK/Regina, WHL), and Carter Ashton (Saskatoon, SK/Lethbridge, WHL). Ashton, who also had three assists, was named West’s player of the game.

Pacific’s goals were scored by Landon Ferraro (Vancouver, BC/Red Deer, WHL), Clayton Jardine (Lacombe, AB/Camrose, AJHL), Justin Maylan (Calgary, AB/Moose Jaw, WHL), Brennan Yadlowski (Edmonton, AB/Lethbridge, WHL), Kellan Tochkin (Abbotsford, BC/Ridge Meadows, PIJHL), and Michael Burns (Edmonton, AB/Edmonton K of C, AMHL).
