CALGARY – Hockey Canada has announced that Jeff Snyder (Elmira, ON) will be the head coach of Canada’s National Sledge Team for the 2008--10 seasons, including the 2010 Winter Paralympic Games in Vancouver. In addition, it was announced that Shawn Frydberg (Concord, ON) and Mike Mondin (Trail, BC) will join Snyder behind the bench as assistant coaches.

“Jeff has had great success behind the bench of the National Sledge Team, and we are very excited that he will return for at least two more seasons,” said Bob Nicholson, president and CEO of Hockey Canada. “We look forward to watching the continuing growth of sledge hockey in our country, and Jeff has played a major role in that growth up to this point.”

Snyder joined the staff of Canada’s National Sledge Team for the 2002-03 season as an assistant coach, and was named head coach prior to the 2004-05 season. Since taking over as head coach, Snyder has led Canada to gold medal victories at the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy, the 2007 World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Kelowna, BC and the 2008 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The Elmira, ON native spent 14 years coaching able-bodied hockey at various levels, including two seasons (1999-2001) as head coach of the Ontario Hockey League’s Kitchener Rangers.

Frydberg spent two seasons (2003-05) as a goaltender coach with Canada’s National Sledge Team before being named an assistant coach prior to the 2005-06 season. He has been behind the bench with Snyder for Canada’s recent run of gold medals, including the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games, 2007 World Sledge Hockey Challenge and 2008 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship. He was a member of Israel’s National Men’s Team from 19, winning a gold medal at the 2000 IIHF Pool D World Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Mondin joins the coaching staff after a long coaching stint with the Trail Smoke Eaters of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League, where he was an assistant coach from 1996--99 and again from 2000--06, also served twice as interim head coach, in 19. Mondin has also been involved with B.C. Hockey’s Under-17 High Performance Program, serving as an assistant coach with Team B.C. at the 1999 Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook, NL, and the head coach at the 2003 Canada Winter Games in Bathurst, NB. He was named a co-winner of B.C. Hockey’s Coach of the Year award in 1998-99.

Snyder, Frydberg and Mondin will work with Adam Crockatt, Hockey Canada’s manager of men’s national teams, to choose Canada’s National Sledge Team for the 2008-09 season. The final selection camp will be held September 4th to 7th in Milton, ON.

It was also announced that the support staff from the 2007-08 season will return: equipment manager Roch Dorion, team doctor Dr. Jamie Kissick, athletic therapist Tony Carbonette and sport psychologist Shaunna Taylor.

Sledge hockey is the Paralympic version of ice hockey. It made its debut at the 1994 Paralympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway. The fast-paced sport has grown in popularity since then.
