The CJAHL in partnership with Hockey Canada announced today a coaching staff change for Team Canada West at the upcoming 2007 World Junior A Challenge.

With Mark Holick leaving the CJAHL to pursue opportunities in the Western Hockey League, Team Canada West has added the services of Merritt Centennials General Manager and Head Coach Al Glendinning as an Assistant Coach.

The depth of coaching talent in the CJAHL allowed Darcy Rota, Team Canada West General Manager, to be able to make this change quickly to their staff so they can continue to build their team in hopes of defending their World Jr A Challenge championship.

“Al brings a great deal of coaching experience and success to our staff and I know he will be a very positive addition to Team Canada West”, stated Rota.

Glendinning was a fourth round pick of the Washington Capitals in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft and during his playing career spent some time in Nelson, where half of the World Jr A Challenge will be played and where he was an Allan Cup finalist with the Nelson Leafs. He has coached NHL stars Jarome Iginla, Robyn Regher and 2007 NHL draft pick, 2006 World Jr A Challenge star for Team Canada West, Casey Pierro-Zabotel. Al is also the 2006 Interior Conference Coach of the Year in the BCHL.

When asked about his recent move to join Team Canada West, Glendinning noted “This is a great honour to be involved in this international tournament. I look forward to working alongside Boris and Dwight who won gold at last year’s tournament. This is also a great opportunity to coach at an international level with Hockey Canada.”

Al will be joining Boris Rybalka (Camrose Kodiaks – AJHL) and assistant coach Dwight McMillan (Weyburn Red Wings – SJHL) behind the Team Canada West bench for the second edition of the annual World Junior A Challenge.

The 2007 World Junior A Challenge will take place from November 5th to 11th in Trail and Nelson, BC. Canada will look to continue its success at the event, as Team Canada East played Team Canada West in the championship finals of the 2006 World Junior A Challenge.
