Hockey Canada Hosts First Ever Concussion Awareness Seminar

CALGARY – Hockey Canada and the Dr. Tom Pashby Sports Safety Fund will bring an enhanced Think First Concussion Road Show to Scotiabank Place in Kanata, ON November 3rd.

Physicians, coaches, managers, trainers, parents, players over 16 years of age, nurses, therapists, chiropractors and dentists are invited to attend the seminar free of charge to discuss issues relating to concussions, such as how to recognize and manage a concussion and the protocol for return to play.

A number of speakers will be a part of the seminar, including:

- Dr. Karen Johnston, a world-renowned concussion specialist, Director of the Concussion Program at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and a member of the University of Toronto Departments of Surgery and Neurosurgery

- Dr. Mark Aubry, Hockey Canada’s chief medical officer and a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Medical Committee

- Dr. Pat Bishop, chair of the Canadian Standards Association committee on equipment and facilities for ice hockey

- Dr. Jamie Kissick, team physician for Canada’s National Sledge Hockey Team

- Dr. Paul Piccininni, a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Medical Committee

- Dr Paul Dennis a sports psychologist and player development coach for the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs

The seminar will cover a number of additional topics, including mouthguards, protective equipment and pressure from peers, coaches and parents.

There is no charge to attend the seminar.
