CALGARY –Hockey Canada’s Director of Female Hockey Julie Healy and National Women’s Team General Manager Melody Davidson announced Friday that Peter Smith (McGill, CIS) will be the head coach of the Canada’s National Women’s Team for the 2007-08 season, including the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Championship in Harbin, China, the 2007 4 Nations Cup in Sweden and all National Women’s Team camps for the upcoming 2007-08 season.

In addition, it was announced that Lisa Jordan and Nancy Wilson will join Smith behind the Canadian bench as assistant coaches.

Today’s announcement gives Davidson the opportunity to step aside from her coaching duties with the National Team, and focus more on her role as General Manager and working with the U18 and U22 players in the women’s program.

Davidson will serve as the head coach for Canada’s first-ever National Women’s Under-18 Team, which will compete at the inaugural IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship, to be held in Canada (location TBD) in January 2008.

“Peter Smith, Lisa Jordan and Nancy Wilson have worked very hard to get to this level, and I look forward to closely working with them during the coming season, but at the same time I’m looking forward to concentrating my efforts this season on our overall women’s program and development,” said Melody Davidson, General Manager of Canada’s National Women’s Team Programs. “By having Peter as the head coach of our national team this season, it will afford me the opportunity to work more with all of our programs in my capacity as General Manager as well working with Julie Healy on our overall preparations leading up to the 2010 Olympics.”

Head coach of the women’s hockey team at McGill University, Peter Smith was an assistant coach under Davidson during the 2006-07 season, which included gold medals at the 2006 4 Nations Cup in Kitchener, ON and 2007 IIHF World Women’s Championship in Winnipeg and Selkirk, MB. He also served as an assistant coach with Canada at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, capturing a gold medal.

Smith has led the Martlets to the CIS women’s championship tournament in seven of the past eight seasons, including a silver medal performance at the 2007 tournament, and was named CIS Coach of the Year in 2002-03. He has also been a coach with Team Quebec at three Esso Women’s Nationals, winning a gold medal as head coach in 2002 and silver medals as an assistant coach in 20.

Lisa Jordan, head coach of the women’s hockey team at St. Mary’s University for the last 10 seasons, has previous experience with Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team, having served as an assistant coach from 2003-2005, and as head coach at the 2006 European Air Canada Cup, where Canada won a gold medal. She has led the Huskies to three Atlantic University Sport (AUS) championships (1998, 2002, 2003), including a perfect 16-0 season in 2002-03, when she was named both AUS and CIS Coach of the Year.

Nancy Wilson, the female high performance coordinator for BC Hockey, was an assistant coach with the National Women’s Under-22 Team from 1999-2001 and returned in 2006-07, working as an assistant coach under Smith during the August exhibition series before taking the reins as head coach and leading Canada to a gold medal at the 2007 European Air Canada Cup. Wilson is an associate coach at the University of British Columbia (CIS) with NWHL and WWHL experience with the Vancouver Griffins and B.C. Breakers, respectively, and was the head coach for Team British Columbia at the 1999 Canada Winter Games.

The 2007-08 coaching staff for Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team and the assistant coaches that will work with Davdison with Canada’s Women’s Under-18 Team will be announced over the course of the next two months.
