Canada to Face Russia in 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship Gold Medal Game
LEKSAND, SWE – Canada’s National Junior Team will face Russia in the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship gold medal game on Friday, January 5th. The Canada/Russia gold medal game will be broadcast LIVE on TSN/RDS and on The Fan Radio Network (check local listings) at 1:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. local.
The bronze medal game will see host Sweden taking on the USA. That game can be seen LIVE on TSN and RDS at 10:00 a.m. ET / 4:00 p.m. local.
In semi-final action on Wednesday, Canada advanced to its sixth consecutive gold medal game with a thrilling 2-1 shootout win over the USA. Jonathan Toews (Winnipeg, MB) scored three times in the shootout, including the game-winner in the seventh round. Canada has won 17 consecutive games at the tournament, and will be looking for its third straight gold medal on Friday.
In the other semi-final, the Russians scored four consecutive goals to erase an early 1-0 Sweden lead and advance to the gold medal game for the fifth time in six years with a 4-2 win.
The Russians won the 2002 and 2003 World Junior titles with gold medal wins over Canada, but the Canadians returned the favour with triumphs in 2005 and 2006.
