Longtime National Women’s Team member Cassie Campbell became the first women’s hockey player ever inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame when she was enshrined along with five other athletes on Thursday in Toronto.

Campbell is the only Canadian hockey player, male or female, to captain a national team to two Olympic gold medals (in 20), also won six gold medals at the IIHF World Women’s Championship (1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004).

A native of Richmond Hill, ON, Campbell served as an alternate captain with the National Women’s Team from 19 before wearing the ‘C’ from 2001 until her retirement on , retiring as the longest serving captain in Canadian hockey history.

Campbell carried her international success to the national stage, winning gold medals at three Esso Women’s Nationals (2000, 2001, 2003), and is the only player to win an NWHL championship and Esso Women’s Nationals gold medal in back-to-back seasons (2000 with the Beatrice Aeros and 2001 with the Calgary Oval X-Treme).

Following her retirement, Campbell joined CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada as a sideline reporter, and became the first woman to do colour commentary on a HNIC broadcast on when she worked alongside longtime play-by-play announcer Bob Cole during the Toronto-Calgary at the Air Canada Centre.

Joining Campbell for induction was former NHL star Mike Bossy, who took part in a pair of Canada Cups, in 19. The Montreal native scored 13 goals in 15 Canada Cup games, helping Canada to the 1984 championship.

Former CFL star Doug Flutie, Olympic gold medal wrestler Daniel Igali, Olympic gold medal cross-country skier Beckie Scott and former Major League star Larry Walker were also inducted.
