Molson Gives Team Canada $125,000 Send-Off Prior to Women's World Hockey Championship
Women's Hockey Team surprised by Molson's Dan O'Neill prior to leaving for China
CALGARY, AB - As the Canadian National Women's Hockey Team wrapped up its training camp today in preparation for next week's 2003 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship, an old friend of the team stopped by to wish the squad luck and drop off a six-figure token of his company's support for the seven-time world champions.
Dan O'Neill, president and CEO of Molson Inc., visited the Women's Team during their training camp in Calgary to surprise the players with yet another show of support from the country's leading brewer and long-time CHA sponsor- a cheque for $125,000 that is to be shared among the team's players and training staff.
Molson made a similar gesture to the Women's Team prior to the games in Salt Lake and followed up with the "Molson Million for Gold" campaign that paid both the Women's and Men's Teams $500,000 for winning gold medals.
"Team Canada's showing in Salt Lake was nothing short of inspiring for every one of us at Molson," said O'Neill. "Our unwavering commitment to hockey is one of the things that make our company unique in Canada. And the spirit of commitment to achieving success is something all of our employees share with this talented hockey team. We are proud to be associated with such a wonderful group of athletes and I invite other Canadian companies to get involved with one of Canada's national teams."
The 2003 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship runs from April 3-9 in Beijing, China. Canada has won gold at all seven Women's Championships and has a perfect 35-0 record.
"Molson has been a great partner with the Canadian Hockey Association for many years," said Bob Nicholson, CHA president. "The support and leadership of Dan O'Neill and the direct involvement with such a proud Canadian company has meant so much to these athletes that they really believe they've got an extra player on their bench wherever they go. Now, we just have to go to China and bring back another gold."
This support of the National Women's Hockey Team is another example of Molson's deeply rooted commitment to the development of Canada's national sport. For more than 50 years, Molson has established and maintained an unparalleled network of relationships with hundreds of teams and leagues across the country - from every Canadian NHL club, junior hockey leagues and the men's and women's national teams to adult recreational and community hockey clubs throughout Canada.
