Team Canada Staff Announced for 2002 Men's World Hockey Championship

CALGARY, AB - Team Canada General Manager, Lanny McDonald, along with Assistant GM Doug Armstrong and Head Coach Wayne Fleming announced on Thursday, the additional staff that will lead Canada in Sweden at the 2002 IIHF Men's World Hockey Championship.

Kevin Prendergast of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, will join Team Canada's staff for the 2002 Men's Worlds as Director, Player Personel. Prendergast will assist McDonald, Armstrong and the coaching staff with the evaluation and selection of players for Team Canada.

Joining the coaching staff will be Rob Cookson of the NHL's Calgary Flames. Cookson, who has numerous international experience with Team Canada including four World Hockey Championships and two Winter Olympic Games, will be Team Canada's Assistant Coach, Video.

Joining the CHA support staff will be Don Fuller of the NHL's Minnesota Wild, who will work closely with the CHA's Pat Clayton as Therapist. The 2002 Men's Worlds will be Fuller's second World Championship experience. Gus Thorson, Equipment Manager of the NHL's Calgary Flames will join Robin McDonald of the CHA as Team Canada's Equipment Managers. The 2002 Men's Worlds will be Thorson's sixth World Championship.

McDonald will announce within the next week, players that will participate for Canada at 2002 World Championship.

Canada is in a premliminary round group with: Latvia, Italy and the USA. Canada's first game at the 2002 IIHF World Hockey Championship will take place in Karlstad, Sweden on April 27 versus Latvia. This year's World Championship, which runs April 27-, will be played in three locations: Karlstad, Gothenburg and Jonkoping, with the final round to be played in Gothenburg.
