Canada Advances to Spengler Cup Final

DAVOS, Switzerland - Canada's National Men's team defeated Sparta Prag 5-4 in Spengler Cup action today. The win moves Canada into the Spengler Cup final, tomorrow vs. the host team from Davos.

Frank Banham and Ray Sheppard had first period goals for Canada, who finished the period trailing 3-2. In the second frame, Marty Murray's goal in the 34th minute brought Canada to within one, still trailing 4-3. The Canadians came out firing on all cylinders in the third period. Former National Junior Team member Christian Dube evened things up in the 54th minute and Chris Bright put the icing on the cake with an empty net goal in the 59th minute.

Canada and Davos have already met once during the tournament, with the Canadians coming out on top by a score of 3-2. The game was deadlocked after regulation time, but Daniel Marois' goal secured the victory for Canada. Both teams finished with identical records of three wins and an overtime loss.

Canada's next game is less than 12 hours away, when they will face the host team from Davos to determine the Spengler Cup Champion.

Head Coach Wayne Fleming is behind the bench for Canada at the Spengler Cup, and is joined by National Men's Team Associate Coach/General Manager Mike Pelino.
