Game Story

LANTEIGNE EARNS SHUTOUT IN METRO’S FIRST WIN

WENDY GRAVES

Weyburn, Sask. – Kira Memet (Kentville, N.S.) and Jenna Pellerin (Halifax, N.S.) scored the goals, Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, N.S.) picked up the shutout and Metro Boston Pizza defeated the Rocky Mountain Raiders at the 2016 Esso Cup.

Nearly 900 local schoolkids took in the first game of Day 2, helping energize the building right out of the gate on Monday.

The Raiders seemed to get the bigger boost in the early going, generating more offensive opportunities over the first 20 minutes. But whereas play seemed to stay mostly in the Metro zone in the first, it was spent more evenly at both ends of the ice in the second. The registered shots on net were few – 4 for Rocky Mountain, 3 for Metro – but that was more the shot-blockers doing than that of either team’s offence.

Memet broke the goal-less deadlock 15:30 into the second. She picked up a Kennedy Moore (Chestermere, Alta.) turnover just inside the Raiders blue line and proceeded to beat Erin Fargey (Langdon, Alta.) high short side from the face-off circle.

Pellerin doubled her team’s lead three minutes into the third. Hannah Dorey (Halifax, N.S.) sent a pass from the corner to her sister, Rachel Dorey (Halifax, N.S.), at the far side of the net. Standing at the top of the crease, Pellerin fanned on the rebound but got enough on her backhand for the puck to go into the open net.
With a power play opportunity late in regulation, the Raiders pulled Fargey and spent the final 1:41 on a six-on-four. Lanteigne stayed calm in her crease, even as Raiders crashed looking for a goal and her teammates followed to defend.

Both teams are now 1-1 in the standings.

Rocky Mountain is back on the ice first Tuesday, when it plays the Saskatoon Stars (12 p.m. MT). Metro follows when it plays the Brantford Ice Cats (3:30 p.m. MT).
