Lower Mainland Communities “Adopt A Country” for Tournament

Vancouver, BC: Teams participating in the 2006 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, December 26, 2005 – January 5, 2006, will receive a warm welcome and enthusiastic support from communities across the Lower Mainland.

At the “Adopt A Country” ceremony, held Wednesday, February 23 at the outdoor Plaza of the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre, mayors of 10 Lower Mainland communities drew the name of a participating country from a hockey helmet. Consuls and prominent citizens from each country presented the mayors with a flag to be flown in their communities. These cities will cheer on their adopted countries throughout the 2006 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.

Here are the civic/country pairings announced:

City of Richmond: Canada
City and Township of Langley: Russia
City of Chilliwack: Czech Republic
City and District of North Vancouver: USA
City of Vancouver: Finland
City of Burnaby: Sweden
City of Coquitlam: Slovakia
City of Surrey: Switzerland
City of Abbotsford: Norway
City of Maple Ridge: Latvia
