Drolet Paces Canada's Women's Olympic Team To 5-2 Win Over Sweden
VIERUMAKI, Finland -- Nancy Drolet of Drummondville, QC, scored twice to pace Canada to a 5-2 victory over Sweden in a three-country women's hockey tournament game on Monday.
The victory ran Canada's won-lost record in the tournament to 3-0 with the final round-robin game today (Tuesday) against the host club, Finland. The tournament final is scheduled for Thursday. Overall, Team Canada is 11-2 so far in its 27-game pre-Olympic schedule as it prepares to compete in the first-ever women's ice hockey tournament at the Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.
Jayna Hefford of Kingston, ON, also scored for Canada, giving her 13 goals in the 12 games she has played so far to lead all Canadian goal scorers. Hayley Wickenheiser of Calgary, AB, and Kathy McCormack of Fredericton, NB had the other goals for Canada. Maria Roth and Malin Gustavsson scored the goals for the Swedish Women's National Team, which was outshot 53-20 in the game. Lesley Reddon of Fredericton, NB, played first two periods in goal for Canada, stopping 14 of 16 shots and Manon Rhéaume of Lac Beauport, QC faced just four shots in the final period. Lotta Gothesson played the entire game for Sweden, stopping 48 of 53 shots.
