Powell River Junior 'A' Star Wins Royal Bank Scholarship

SUMMERSIDE, PEI -- Defenceman Kyle Wilson of the Powell River Paper Kings of the British Columbia Junior 'A' Hockey League, and an honors student at North Delta Senior Secondary School, is the national winner of a $1,500 Royal Bank Scholarship, Canadian Hockey announced Friday.

The Royal Bank Junior A Scholarship program is designed to provide educational assistance to outstanding Junior A players, based on their academic accomplishments and on-ice performance.

Wilson, 20, of Powell River, BC, was one of seven players awarded $1,000 Royal Bank scholarships earlier this week. The other 1997 winners were: Patrick Saurette, 20, of the Selkirk Steelers; Dan Bakenfuhr, 21, of the St. Albert Saints; Deny Gaudet, 20, of the Moncton Gagnon Beavers; Eric Bourbonnais, 20, of the Gloucester Rangers; Carl Desjardins, 18, of Collège Français de Longueuil; and Bart Redden, 20, of the North Battleford North Stars.

The announcement that Wilson was also the national winner of a $1,500 Royal Bank scholarship was made at the awards banquet of the Royal Bank Cup, the National Junior A Hockey Championship.

Wilson, who has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) at North Delta, has been on the honor roll at that school since 1990. He won top academic awards there from 1991-94. This fall, Wilson will enrol at the University of British Columbia in the pre-medical school program.

To be eligible for a scholarship under the Royal Bank Junior A Scholarship program a player must be a Canadian citizen, be a Junior A carded athlete,and be enrolled in a full-time post-secondary program or secondary school program. The scholarship must be utilized within 12 months of completion of the award recipient's Junior hockey eligibility.
