2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship

Sweden 4 - Czech Republic 0

THE MOMENT: Sweden @ Czech Republic – Monday, April 8

by Jamie Shinkewski

NEPEAN, Ont. – For the first 45 seconds of the second period, Sweden was killing yet another penalty.

The Swedes had been outshot 10-2 in the first period, and the momentum was very much in favour of the Czech Republic.

Sweden finished killing its third straight penalty and needed something to change.

Exactly one minute after the penalty expired, Sweden got the break they were looking for.

Linnea Backman found the puck in the middle of a net front scramble and poked it between the legs of a sprawling Radka Lhotska for the eventual game-winning goal.

Sweden only allowed two shots on goal in the entire second period, cruising to a 4-0 victory to keep its place amongst the world’s best women’s hockey teams.

The young Czech team could not get the momentum back, and the country will be relegated to Division I following its first-ever IIHF Ice Hockey World Women’s Championship appearance.

Lina Wester, Johanna Olofsson and Elin Holmlov added goals for the Swedes, who swept the best-of-three relegation series with the victory.

One “moment” completely changed the complexion of the game. The wind was completely removed from the Czech Republic’s sails. The Czechs could not recover and force a third game.
