Switzerland 3 - Germany 5

THE MOMENT: Switzerland @ Germany – Monday, April 8

by Sarah Forgrave

OTTAWA, Ont. – Switzerland faced off against Germany in the first of three games Monday at SBP Arena, with Germany winning the game 5-3 – and claiming fifth place in the standing – in front of a crowd of more than 4,000 fans.

The “moment” of the game came when 27-year-old Franziska Busch of Germany scored twice within two minutes, including one goal on the power-play and the other at equal strength, in the early part of the second period to put the Germans up 3-1.

The first period was mired by errors on both sides, as nerves seemed to get the best of both the Germans and Swiss, with a myriad of missed passes and turnovers. But the opening frame would see Switzerland get on the board first on a goal by captain Julia Marty, which came as a result of a penalty shot assessed to Germany’s Busch, when she covered the puck in the crease following a scramble. Germany answered back with a goal of its own 37 seconds later, when Marie Delarbre scored to tie the game. By the end of the first period, shots on goal were equal at 10 shots apiece.

As if to redeem herself for the penalty shot infraction that led to the first Swiss goal, the second period opened with Germany’s Franziska Busch scoring at 4:05, and again at 5:37, on the power play. Germany would score again at 9:11 to close out the second period 4-1.

On her two goals of the game and the impact of her goals earlier this week against the Czech Republic, Busch would said: “I’m very happy that I can help my team in these important games versus the Czech Republic and today, Switzerland.”

The final frame of the game would see Switzerland’s Jessica Lutz cut the score in half to 4-2 at equal strength, only to have Germany score again with less than two minutes remaining in the game on an empty Swiss net. With Florence Schelling returning to the net, Lutz would score again with 11 seconds remaining in the game. Nevertheless, Germany took the game and fifth place standing with a final score of 5-3. Switzerland finished in sixth place.
