Germany 6 - Czech Republic 3

THE MOMENT: Germany @ Czech Republic – Friday, April 5

by Kaarina Stiff

NEPEAN, Ont. – The Germans had something to prove on the final day of round robin play at the Nepean Sportsplex on Friday, and they did exactly that, earning a decisive 6-3 win over the Czech Republic.

Struggling to avoid relegation, the Germans showed their best with a power play that the Czech Republic just couldn’t solve. The turning point, or “moment,” of Game 9 came 29 seconds into the middle frame, when Germany scored its fourth of the game, and their second in less than a minute and a half. The even-strength goal was the icing on the cake for the Germans, whose textbook power play goals gave them confidence and energy to maintain pressure against an increasingly frustrated Czech team.

The Germans proceeded to close the gap in shots on goal, which stood at 14-6 in favour of the Czech Republic at the close of the first period, to 30-23 in favour of the Czech team. What’s more, the Germans earned the moment to have their flag raised at the Nepean Sportsplex to mark an important win for them.
