Canada Wins Air Canada Cup in Germany

RAVENSBURG, Germany
The atmosphere was electric once again at the Ravensburg Eissporthalle on Sunday night as another boisterous close to capacity crowd watched Team Canada take on the host Germans for the Air Canada Cup title. Enthusiastic fans cheered on the home side relentlessly with drums beating and continuous chanting throughout the game. However, the Canadian Women’s Under 22 Team skated to a 6-1 victory over Germany.

Sabrina Harbec opened the scoring for Canada early at 3:16 of the first as she took a pass from Rebecca Johnston at the side of the net and managed to bank the puck past German goalie Viona Harrer. Germany tied the score at 13:06 on a two man advantage as Michaela Lanzl roofed a rebound under the crossbar over Shannon Szabados in the Canadian goal.

Canada took control of the game early in the second. Dominique Thibault banged home a rebound to end a scramble in front of the German goal with Hayley McMeekin earning the assist at 4:04. Two quick goals just before the mid way point of the period put the game out of reach. Rebecca Johnston deflected a Jocelyne Larocque point shot at 8:29 which was quickly followed by Ashley Riggs finishing off a passing play from linemates Sarah Vaillancourt and Meghan Agosta at 9:06 to give Canada a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the final period. Team Canada added two more goals just over a minute apart early in the third with Ashley Riggs and Melanie Gagnon upping the score to 6-1.

In addition to the championship trophy, Canada also brought home some hardware from the tournament individual awards. Defencemen Tessa Bonhomme and Bobbi Jo Slusar were named to the allstar team along with forward Ashley Riggs. Annie Guay received the directorate award for Top Defenceman.

Team Canada players and staff will fly home on Monday with everyone returning to their respective school and club teams in North America.
