RED STAGES LATE GAME COMEBACK TO BEAT WHITE 3-2

TORONTO, Ont. – The opening period of Saturday’s intersquad game belonged to White, but Red owned both the second and the third to stage an impressive comeback that gave them the 3-2 edge by the end of Saturday night’s intersquad game inside the MasterCard Centre.

White opened the scoring by jumping on an early power play opportunity, with Brittany Zuback (Thunder Bay, Ont.) putting it past Red netminder Jaimie Leonoff (Montreal, Que.) at just 1:40 in the first. Melissa Channell (Oakville, Ont.) and Cayley Mercer (Exeter, Ont.) contributed assists.
With momentum in their favour, Red made it 2-0 at 13:06 in the first on a goal from Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont.), with helpers going to Hailey Browne (Oakville, Ont.) and Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, Man.). But despite the best efforts of White goaltender Amanda Makela (Thunder Bay, Ont.), the momentum quickly swung in the other direction.

Katy Josephs kicked off the comeback with six minutes left in the second, scoring an unassisted marker to narrow the gap to 2-1 going into the intermission and giving Red the confidence to really start clicking on the ice.

With smart playmaking and crisp passes, Red was all over the offensive zone in the third, causing White to scramble and take three penalties in the final period. Red blueliner Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ont.) let a shot go from the point midway through the period, with Shelby Bram (Ste. Anne, Man.) getting her stick on it and putting it over the White goal line to tie it up at two-apiece.

Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ont.) scored the game winner and sealed the comeback with help from Alexis Crossley (Cole Harbour, N.S.) at 14:14 in the third, and Red goalie Ann-Renée Desbiens was able to hold off a determined White squad as the final minutes ticked down, until the buzzer finally sounded.

Saturday night’s game was the first of two Red-White intersquad games at Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 selection camp, with the second matchup set for Sunday, December 19 at 10 a.m. ET.
