2009-10 National Women's Under-18 Team

Germany 0 - Canada 15

CHICAGO, Ill. – After scoring just six times on 60 shots in Saturday’s victory over Russia, it was just a matter of time before Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team found its offensive stride at the 2010 IIHF World Women’s Under-18 Championship.

It found it Sunday.

Jessica Campbell (Melville, Sask./Pursuit of Excellence, Midget AAA) scored twice and added four assists and 10 players had at least two-point nights as Canada exploded for a 15-0 win over Germany at Seven Bridges Ice Arena.

After needing more than 13 minutes to score against the Russians, Canada was up 5-0 before the 10-minute mark of the opening period on Sunday, led a goal and an assist by Shannon Doyle (Baldwin, Ont./Toronto, PWHL) and a pair of assists from Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont./Ottawa, PWHL).

Mélodie Daoust (Valleyfield, Que./Edouard-Montpetit, Collégial AA), Hayleigh Cudmore (Oakville, Ont./Oakville, PWHL), Jillian Saulnier (Halifax, N.S./Toronto, PWHL) and Kelly Terry (Whitby, Ont./Whitby, PWHL) also joined in on the first-period fun for Canada, which outshot the Germans 17-6 in the opening 20 minutes.

The offensive onslaught continued in the second period as Campbell and Carly Mercer (Exeter, Ont./Bluewater, PWHL) made it 7-0 before the seven-minute mark of the middle frame. Christine Bestland (Brunkild, Man./ Pursuit of Excellence, Midget AAA) knocked a rebound past German goaltender Stephanie Hruby to make it 8-0 before Terry notched her second of the game by splitting the German ‘D’ and sliding the puck around Hruby for a 9-0 Canadian advantage after 40 minutes.

Doyle welcomed Hruby back to the ice by picking up a loose puck and firing a laser over the German’s shoulder to put Canada into double digits 3:16 into the third period, with Campbell picking her fifth point with an assist.

The Canadian captain added her second goal and sixth point in the dying minutes, but not before Cudmore, Rattray and Hannah Armstrong (Sharon, Ont./Aurora, PWHL) had pushed Canada’s lead to a baker’s dozen at 13-0.

Sarah Davis (Paradise, N.L./Warner Academy, JWHL) got in on the goal-scoring act with 90 seconds to go, spinning away from a German defender in the slot and roofing the puck over the glove of Hruby to round out the scoring.

Carmen MacDonald (Pictou, N.S./Westminster School, U.S. Prep) needed to make just 14 saves in the Canadian goal to record the shutout in her world championship debut.

Campbell’s half-dozen points moved her past former U18 captain Brianne Jenner into second on the all-time U18 scoring list, just eight points behind Canadian Olympic hero Marie-Philip Poulin.

Canada wraps up preliminary round play on Tuesday, taking on Sweden at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT, a game that can be seen live via webcast at www.fasthockey.com for just $6.99.
