BIG FIRST PERIOD LEADS CANADA RED TO 4-1 WIN OVER JAPAN AND CAMP CHAMPIONSHIP Canada Red is the last team standing at the National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp after scoring a 4-1 win over Japan on Sunday afternoon in Calgary to claim the camp championship. Jessica Campbell (Melville, SK) led the way offensively for Canada Red, scoring a pair of powerplay goals just 2:29 apart in the first period, while Ally Tarr (London, ON) and Isabel Ménard (Ottawa, ON) chipped in with a goal apiece. Canada Red finished the camp with a perfect 5-0 record, outscoring the opposition 17-6. After an opening 10 minutes that saw both teams get quality scoring chances, it was Campbell who got the Canadians on the board first, collecting a loose puck just outside the crease and lifting a backhand past goaltender Azusa Nakaoku. Campbell struck again less than three minutes later, taking a beautiful from behind the net from Laurie Kingsbury (Valleyfield, QC) and one-timing it past Nakaoku, who had another strong game, making 27 saves, despite the loss. Tarr wrapped up a busy six minutes by streaking down the left wing and firing a slap shot that just snuck through Nakaoku to give the Canadians a commanding three-goal lead heading to the intermission. Canada Red split the goaltending duties for the game, as starter Jenesica Drinkwater (Brantford, ON) gave way to Roxanne Douville (Beloeil, QC) at the game’s midway point. Drinkwater turned aside all 11 shots she faced in her 30 minutes of work, 10 of those coming in the first period when the Japanese had the majority of their best chances. The team from the Far East got on the board late in the second period, as Tomoko Sakagami converted on a Japanese powerplay, but that would be the only puck to beat Douville, who faced just four shots in her half-hour of action. Ménard had the lone highlight of a relatively quiet third period, tipping home a Saige Pacholok (Edmonton, AB) point shot with just over five minutes remaining to provide the final margin of victory. Pacholok finished with a pair of assists in the win. With the camp wrapped up, the next step is to choose Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team for a three-game series against the USA, which will take place in Lake Placid, NY from August 20-23. The 22-player roster will be announced in the coming weeks.
