2012-13 National Women's Team

Canada 2 - Gatineau Jr. B 6

GATINEAU, Que. – Despite a difficult 6-2 loss, candidates of Canada’s National Women’s Team skated away from Wednesday night’s exhibition game against the Gatineau Junior B Mustangs with important on-ice experience to help the women in red and white prepare for the upcoming world championship in the nation’s capital.

And although Gatineau took the win in front of their hometown fans at the Centre sportif de Buckingham, it was Canada to kick off the scoring in the first, with forward Meghan Agosta-Marciano (Ruthven, Ont./Montreal, CWHL) getting her stick on the puck and the puck into the back of the net at the nine-minute mark. But a penalty quickly cost Canada its only lead of the game, with Gatineau’s Guillame Tardif Richard tying it up on a power-play just a minute and a half later.

The game remained a closely matched affair throughout the middle frame, with Maxime Gagnon making it 2-1 for Gatineau at 8:45 in the second, and blueliner Tara Watchorn (Newcastle, Ont./Alberta, CWHL) replying at 14:08, accepting a pass out front from Agosta-Marciano and letting a quick wrist shot go to put the puck into the top corner and tie up the game once again. But Joey Mazerolle regained the edge for Gatineau with a goal at 16:42 to make it 3-2 after 40 minutes.

Canada was sent to the sin bin three times in the third, making it challenging for the red and white to get back on the board. Dominik Robinson scored mere seconds after the intermission, Mazerolle notched his second marker of the game on a power-play at 9:08 in the period and Mikael Gervais capped it off at 12:40 to seal the 6-2 win for Gatineau. Christina Kessler (Mississauga, Ont./Toronto, CWHL) and Geneviève Lacasse (Kingston, Ont./Boston, CWHL) split duties between for the posts for Canada.

Win or lose, Canada’s National Women’s Team took away valuable lessons from its match-up against Gatineau, which will assist all players vying for a spot on the squad as they get ready for the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship, taking place April 2-9 in Ottawa, Ont.
