CANADA BLANKS CZECHS, ADVANCES TO GOLD MEDAL GAME AT SLEDGE WORLDS
GOYANG, South Korea – Canada’s National Sledge Team will play for the gold medal at the IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship for the first time since 2008 after a 5-0 semifinal win over the Czech Republic on Thursday.
It will be an all-North American final - the Canadians will face the United States, the defending world champions, on Saturday (3:30 a.m. ET/1:30 a.m. PT).
Captain Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) scored the game’s first two goals early in the second period to start the offence for Canada. Dominic Larocque (Quebec City, Que.) and Marc Dorion (Bourget, Ont.) scored 27 seconds apart late in the second period for a four-goal lead after 30 minutes.
Adam Dixon (Midland, Ont.) added a shorthanded tally in the third period as Canada beat the Czechs for the third time in as many all-time meetings, including the bronze medal game at last year's world championship.
Corbin Watson (Kingsville, Ont.) needed to make just six saves for the shutout, his third consecutive clean slate for Canada. He has yet to allow a goal in the tournament.
