1994 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES
LILLEHAMMER, NOR

Canada prepped for Lillehammer with a full exhibition schedule, playing at the Telehockey Cup in Norway, Nova Scotia International Cup, Globen Cup in Sweden, Deutschland Cup in Germany, and Izvestia tournament in Moscow, giving head coach Tom Renney the opportunity to make changes after spotting various weaknesses. Canada got a wakeup call in the preliminary round after losing 3-1 to Slovakia, and narrowly escaped elimination in the quarter-finals before beating the Czechs 3-2 in overtime thanks to star forward Paul Kariya. After a semifinal win over Finland, the Canadians took part in the most dramatic gold-medal game in Olympic history. Canada had a late 3-2 lead but surrendered a goal to Magnus Svensson with less than two minutes to play, and a goalless overtime forced a shootout. After five shots, both teams had two goals. It didn’t end until the seventh shot, when Peter Forsberg scored his famous ‘Stamp’ goal on Corey Hirsch and Kariya was stopped by Tommy Salo, leaving Canada with its second-consecutive Olympic silver.
