CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada announced Tuesday that Jeff Tomlinson (Winnipeg, Man.), head coach of Eisbären Berlin of the Deutschen Eishockey Liga (DEL) has been named head coach of Canada’s National Men’s Team for the 2014 Deutschland Cup, which will be held Nov. 7-9 in Munich, Germany.

Serge Aubin (Val-d’Or, Que.) and Mike Stewart (Calgary, Alta.) will join Tomlinson behind the bench as assistant coaches.

Jeff Tomlinson, 44, has been the head coach in Berlin for the past two seasons, having previously served in the same position with the Nürnberg Ice Tigers in 2012 and Düsseldorfer EG from 2010-12. He played three seasons of junior hockey with the WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders from 1987-90, before a 12-year pro career from 1991-2003 in the ECHL, Germany and England.

Serge Aubin, 39, was named head coach of the DEL’s Hamburg Freezers on Sept. 25 after two seasons as an assistant coach. He appeared in 374 games over seven NHL seasons with Colorado, Columbus and Atlanta from 1999-2006, and also played in the IHL, AHL, Switzerland and Germany during a 17-year pro career. Aubin was a three-time member of Canada’s National Men’s Team at the Spengler Cup (2008, 2009, 2011), captaining Team Canada to the championship in 2007.

Mike Stewart, 42, has spent the last two seasons as head coach of the DEL2’s Fischtown Pinguins, leading the team to the league championship last year, in addition to earning coach of the year honours. He was also head coach of Villacher SV in Austria from 2010-12. Stewart played 18 years of pro hockey in the AHL, IHL, Germany and Austria, and spent the 1996-97 season with Canada’s National Men’s Team.

“These three coaches all bring experience at various levels of the game, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring them together as a staff for the Deutschland Cup,” said Scott Salmond, vice-president of hockey operations and national teams with Hockey Canada. “We’re looking forward to getting a roster named and getting on the ice to represent Canada next month in Munich.”

Canada’s National Men’s Team last participated in the Deutschland Cup in 2012, finishing fourth. Canada has taken part in the tournament on 16 occasions (1992-2006, 2008, 2010, 2012), winning four gold medals (2000, 2002, 2005, 2008).

Canada will open the tournament on Friday, Nov. 7 when it meets Slovakia at 10:30 a.m. ET/7:30 a.m. PT at the Olympia-Eissportzentrum in Munich. It will also face Switzerland and host Germany in the round-robin tournament.
