ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – Team Canada is welcoming a new blue-liner to its squad at the 2016 IIHF World Championship.

Hockey Canada announced that Ryan Ellis (Freelton, Ont./Nashville, NHL) is being added to Canada’s National Men’s Team following Saturday’s 5-0 win over Slovakia.

“We had the opportunity to add one more experienced, puck-moving defenceman,” said co-general manager George McPhee of Ellis’ addition to the roster. “Ryan is very familiar with these players and has had a lot of success with them internationally; he will be a great fit with this group.”

Ellis has a history of winning gold for his country, beginning with the 2007 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge where he played for Ontario, and including IIHF U18 World Championship and IIHF World Junior Championship gold in 2008 and 2009, respectively. He went on to wear the Maple Leaf at World Juniors in 2010 and 2011, bringing home silver at both competitions. Ellis has been a permanent fixture on the Predators’ roster since the 2013-14 season.

Hockey Canada’s broadcast partners, TSN and RDS, are providing broad coverage of the tournament on television and radio; TSN has committed to televise all 64 tournament games, while RDS will carry all Team Canada games, as well as the four quarter-finals, two semifinals, and both medal games. Audiences can also tune in to game broadcasts on TSN Radio and the TSN GO app.

Since 1931, Canada has won the world championship 19 times – not counting the years when Olympic Winter Games gold-medallists were also considered world champions. The country has also collected 11 silver medals and six bronze in that timespan.
