PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – Opening night at the 2020 Esso Cup is sure to be electric, with the host Prince Albert Bears taking on the Atlantic Region champions on April 19.

The tournament schedule was unveiled Tuesday, with five regional champions (Atlantic, Ontario, Pacific, Quebec, West) joining the Bears at the Art Hauser Centre from April 19-25 to compete for Canada’s National Female Midget Championship.

In addition, full-tournament packages, priced at $65, are now on sale at HockeyCanada.ca/Tickets. The package includes all 15 preliminary-round games, both semifinals, and the bronze and gold medal games.

“The 2020 Esso Cup host committee has been working hard over the past year preparing to host another world-class event in Prince Albert,” said Robin Wildey, chair of the local host organizing committee. “We have had tremendous support from sponsors and the community, and putting tickets on sale is another big step towards April. This tournament will provide Prince Albert with national exposure, and we are committed to making it the best Esso Cup ever.”

In its 12th year, the Esso Cup will head to the Land of the Living Skies for the third time, with Prince Albert joining Regina (2010) and Weyburn (2016) as Saskatchewan hosts. The Bears will look to become the first host team to win the national title, and the third team from Saskatchewan; the Notre Dame Hounds claimed gold in 2011 and the Weyburn Gold Wings took home the top prize in 2014.

“Saskatchewan has a history of success at the Esso Cup, both competing for the national championship and hosting it, and we are excited to be bringing it back to our province for the third time,” said Kelly McClintock, general manager of the Saskatchewan Hockey Association. “We look forward to welcoming the best in women’s Midget hockey to Prince Albert, and expect a week to remember for players, staff, officials, volunteers and fans.”

Historically, the event has generated more than $1 million in local economic impact, with event proceeds being directed to supporting women’s hockey initiatives and development throughout the community. As with all Hockey Canada national championships, the net proceeds from all ticket sales will remain in the host community.
