SUDBURY, Ont. - Anticipation is building in Sudbury, as ticket packages have been released for the 2019 Esso Cup. The host Sudbury Lady Wolves will take on the Atlantic Region champions on opening night, April 21, at 7 p.m. ET.

Full-event ticket packages for Canada’s National Female Midget Championship go on sale Oct. 20, giving Sudbury residents access to all 19 games at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex. Packages can be purchased for $60 at HockeyCanada.ca/Tickets.

“This is a hockey town that has supported the Sudbury Lady Wolves program for years,” said Cora Babij, co-chair of the 2019 Esso Cup host organizing committee. “It’s wonderful that that the community will be able to show their support for teams from across the country. We’re ready to welcome players and fans to Sudbury, and show them all we have to offer.”

The Lady Wolves made back-to-back appearances at the Esso Cup in 2014 and 2015, winning bronze in its first trip to the tournament before claiming the national title a year later in Red Deer, Alta. They own the sixth-most wins in Esso Cup history, posting a 10-4 record. With just under 1,000 seats in the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex, the atmosphere in the arena is sure to be electric as the Lady Wolves look to return to the top of the podium.

The full schedule for the 11th edition of Canada’s National Female Midget Championship features 19 games from April 21-27, 2019, with the Lady Wolves and competing with five regional champions (Atlantic, Ontario, Pacific, Quebec, West).

The Nickel City is no stranger to hosting Hockey Canada events; it welcomed the TELUS Cup, Canada’s National Midget Championship, to the community in 1998 and 2018, hosted Canada’s National Junior A Championship in 1991, and staged games as part of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in 1992.

“After such a success with the 2018 TELUS Cup, Hockey Canada is looking forward to being back in Sudbury for another national championship,” said Dean McIntosh, vice-president of events and properties for Hockey Canada. “This is a prestigious event, and the Sudbury hockey community will embrace the Esso Cup as it has previous events, making it a special experience for the participating teams and the fans who come out to support them.”

Since its start in 2009, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship has been hosted in Ontario only once before, when Hamilton welcomed the event in 2014.

“The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) has always been proud of the women who have represented us at the Esso Cup,” said Fran Rider, president and CEO of the OWHA. “Having the opportunity to host this tournament on Ontario ice is a special opportunity to showcase the strength of women’s hockey in Canada.”

Historically, the Esso Cup has generated more than $1 million in local economic impact, and net proceeds from the event will be directed into supporting female hockey initiatives in the community.

Hockey Canada’s official broadcast partners, TSN and RDS, will air the gold-medal game on Sunday, April 27, while all other games will be available via live stream at HockeyCanada.ca/EssoCup.
