Hockey Canada to participate in 2017 IIHF Development Camp
356 participants from 58 countries gather in Vierumäki, Finland

CALGARY, Alta. – Hockey Canada announced Wednesday the players and staff invited to participate in the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Development Camp, July 8-15, 2017 in Vierumäki, Finland.

This year marks the 15th year for the annual camp, which is educational while also promoting positive hockey experiences. The program is also meant to continue the advancement of the IIHF’s development and education programs, which will lead to the worldwide growth of the game.

Specifically geared to each National Association, the camp offers quality education programs, which deliver a safe and positive experience for the players. Additionally, the camp aims to educate future hockey leaders, encourage fair play and respect, and provide growth and development of the participants, while sharing information and solutions on issues when collaborating with each other.

Since its inception in Nymburk, Czech Republic, in August 1999, the IIHF has hosted more than 10 events, with Hockey Canada sending 47 participants to the camp. This year, two Canadian players are participating:

  • Nicholas DeGrazia (Thunder Bay, Ont./Thunder Bay, NAPHL)
  • Jérémie Poirier (Montreal, Que./Châteauguay, LHMAAAQ)

In addition to the players, four Hockey Canada staff will share their experiences and leadership as members of the camp staff. Officiating supervisor mentor, Todd Anderson (Calgary), Paul Carson (Victoria, B.C.) with the MNA leadership development program, mentor coach, Kevin Figsby (Montreal, Que.) and camp chairman, Tom Renney (Cranbrook, B.C.).

“This is a unique opportunity for more than 50 countries to come together and work with some of the best hockey minds from around the globe,” said Figsby. “As a leader in the sport, Canada can maintain its vision by not only learning and sharing ideas, but by expanding our vision of growing the game both at home and internationally.”
