COBOURG, Ont. – The teams are set and ready for puck-drop at the 2017 RBC Cup in Cobourg, Ont., May 13-21.

Five teams – including the host Cobourg Cougars – are ready to lace them up in the final stretch of their journey to capture the RBC Cup.

What started as 132 teams in 10 CJHL leagues on the #Road2RBC now sees the following teams featured at the Cobourg Community Centre this week: Trenton Golden Hawks (Central); Cobras de Terrebonne (East); Cobourg Cougars (Host); Brooks Bandits (West – 1); and Penticton Vees (West – 2).

“From our vast volunteer base to the support received from the Town of Cobourg, the local businesses within Northumberland County and hockey fans from across Canada, the entire community has come together in an unprecedented way to make sure this will be an event to remember for these five teams and their fans and everyone involved,” said Marc Mercier, 2017 RBC Cup host-committee chair. “It’s been a long road for these teams to qualify to play for the RBC Cup and Canada’s National Junior A Championship; we are in for a great event, and some great hockey over the course of the next nine days.”

The first game gets underway at 3:30 p.m. ET when the Cobras de Terrebonne face off against the 2013 RBC Cup champions, the Brooks Bandits. All five teams will take part in an on-ice opening ceremony before the 7:30 p.m. ET game which features the host Cobourg Cougars taking on their nearby rivals, the Trenton Golden Hawks.

A limited number of seven-game packages and single-game tickets are still available online or at the Cobourg Community Centre box office; net proceeds from all ticket sales remain in the community to support the growth of the game at the grassroots level.

The championship game will be broadcast on TSN and RDS, official broadcasters of Hockey Canada, on Sunday, May 21. All preliminary-round games plus the two semifinals will be available via live stream at HockeyCanada.ca/RBCCup.

Hockey Canada Foundation makes Dreams Come True in Cobourg

Local children from 26 income-qualified families are directly benefitting from a unique program funded by the Hockey Canada Foundation as part of the positive impact Hockey Canada looks to bring to the communities that host national championships such as the RBC Cup.

The Dreams Come True program provides kids with head-to-toe Bauer equipment as well as both a floorball session and on-ice fun skills development in an effort to help families who are experiencing financial difficulty to allow their children a chance to start or stay in the game. In addition to the activities this Saturday and Sunday led by Hockey Canada’s membership development instructors, the Hockey Canada Foundation will also help cover next season’s registration costs.

“I’ve had the opportunity to lead a number of Dreams Come True events throughout the country, and it’s an unbeatable experience in so many ways,” said Ryan Hurley, manager of the Hockey Canada Regional Centre, Ontario. “We make sure the kids are having fun, and I’m always overwhelmed to see the appreciation the families have for what the Hockey Canada Foundation is able to provide to them in terms of helping them keep their kids playing the game we all love.”

Dreams Come True participants will also attend Saturday’s afternoon game.

The RBC Cup is made possible thanks to the partnership between Hockey Canada and the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL), and the support of RBC. For more information on the 2017 RBC Cup, please visit HockeyCanada.ca/RBCCup, or follow along via social media on Facebook or Twitter.
